Google buys startups Apture and Katango

Acquisitions to supercharge Chrome and Google+.

Search engine Google has made the startup purchases for an undisclosed amount to strengthen the user experience of its social network Google+ and Chrome browser.

Apture has been in operation for four years and its speciality is in-page technology, which grants immediate access to information.

Apture, which is set to boost the Chrome browser, says: "We have been acquired by Google and will be joining the Chrome team to continue driving innovation and creating a better user experience on the web."

Fellow adopted sibling Katango is the younger of the two and has been in operation for just over one year. It constructs algorithms that automatically sorts friends in order to better online social interaction.

Google+ has over 40 million users and Katango is expected to help organisation of  their 'circles.' Katango, says: "We are excited to join the Google Plus team and carry on fulfilling that mission. Google Plus is seeing tremendous momentum, so it's a perfect time to join and make Circles smarter for millions of people."

Across the first nine months of 2011 Google acquired 57 companies worth $502 million, which surpasses its previous record of 44 buyouts last year although 2010's total expense was considerably more at $669 million.
