Update adds Foursquare-style gamification to social location platform.
Google's Latitude social location platform was launched almost two years ago, offering developers location-based app functions and shortly after that, check-ins.
Yes, it does all sound a lot like Foursquare. Even more so after this weekend, when the newest Latitude update was introduced to give users points based on their check-ins, recording them onto a leaderboard.
Engagdet says the new feature was rolled out under cover of darkness over the weekend, which is an odd move. Having pushed its other social platform Google+ with zest, it's strange that the firm chose to add a new feature without all the usual bells and whistles.
Foursquare has over 15 million users and one billion check-ins to date.
