Google: 'Android adoption is literally about to explode'

CEO Eric Schmidt waxes lyrical on smartphone OS growth.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has issued a bullish warning to the company's rivals in the smartphone market, saying that Android is set for lift off.

"Android adoption is literally about to explode," he said in Google's Q3 financials conference call last night. "You have all the necessary conditions. You have the vendors, you have the distribution, and so forth."

The call also saw senior VP of product management Jonathan Rosenberg reveal that 12 Android handsets are now available through 32 operators in 26 countries, while pointing out that Android Market has more than 10,000 apps available.

"The strategy of delivering a modern, open-source OS and enabling an ecosystem of developers and carriers seems to be paying off and the strategy is working," he said.

Google also revealed more info on how Android is actually making it money, with Schmidt saying that mobile searches were up 30% quarter-on-quarter. That's not just down to Android, of course.
