Google adds 'News Near You' to its mobile Google News service

Location-based feature aims to connect US mobile users with goings on in their community.

Google has given its mobile Google News service a new location-based feature, which helps users to browse news stories from their current location.

The feature is called News Near You, and is currently available for iOS and Android browser users in the US. It's based on the existing local news features in the online version of Google News, which made their debut in 2008.

Users have to share their location with Google before they can access the feature, which adds a dedicated section towards the bottom of the Google News mobile home page.

The company has not announced when the new feature will roll out elsewhere in the world. However, British users can manually set a postcode or town/city name to add their local news to the site.
