Google adds local stock data to Product Search mobile service

Want a product? It's available just down the road!

Google has gone live with a new feature on its mobile Product Search service, allowing people to see when items they've searched for are available to buy near their current location.

It was shown in a preview version last December, but is now available on the service for US users, according to a post on the Google Mobile blog.

Users searching for products will now see 'blue dots' in the search results for any that are in stock nearby in Google's retailer partners.

Retailers signed up already include Best Buy, Sears, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn and West Elm. The new feature works on Google's mobile site for iPhone, Android and Palm webOS.

Google is inviting other retailers to take part in the initiative. It'll face competition from local search firm Milo, whose co-founder says it has 49 retail partners.
