Getty Images will mine the Hispanic content market with FotoMovil, a Spanish-language version of its PictureCast photo news service.
The US imaging giant is preparing to roll out FotoMovil with Sprint and Boost in the next few weeks. The new service will present content localised for the US Hispanic population in the Spanish language.
Like PictureCast, FotoMovil will be a subscription WAP application that reports major events around the world. PictureCast is currently available on Cingular, Sprint Nextel and Boost.
Recent research from M:Metrics suggested why Getty made the move. It revealed 25.8 per cent of US Hispanics has accessed mobile news or info at least once in a month, compared with 13.5 per cent of the general population.
Brooks McMahon, Getty’s VP of business development, said: “PictureCast has been getting great traction for us as a WAP application. It makes sense for us to launch FotoMovil as the US’s Spanish speakers have shown such a disproportionate enthusiasm for mobile content services.”
Getty has been carefully building up its mobile activity in the last 12 months. With its vast image library, the company is highly active in licensing its IP to aggregators all over the world for use in wallpapers and screensavers. It also works directly with operators, supplying all the pics for 3UK’s Today On 3 news service, for example.

The company has experimented with its own ideas too. Of these PictureCast has attracted most interest from carriers and end users. Indeed, Getty is now investigating versions of the service based around more specific market sectors.
