Doubling user base every month.
GetJar Gold is a virtual currency but it pays out real money to developers funded by advertising.
It works by inviting developers to code an SDK into their apps. This adds a 'pay with GetJar Gold' option alongside any traditional in-app payments currency they already use - and thereby takes the currency to apps on stores such as Google Play or Amazon Appstore.
Meanwhile end users can earn coins for web visits, demo downloads and so on and then use them to buy premium apps for 'free'.
GetJar Gold was launched by the indie app store in Feburary, passed 2.5m users in May and has set a target of 40m at the end of the year.
GetJar claims the virtual currency has a number of advantages over traditional billing solutions. It allows for one click transactions without multi-step registrations, and supports immediate purchases.
It can be accepted in all countries to all app users.
Ilja Laurs, chairman of GetJar, said: “We are thrilled with the success of GetJar Gold Virtual Currency so far, users get the content for free and developers get paid for creating great apps like Solo and Go SMS. It is increasingly difficult for users to pay for content given the limited payment options available in many countries.
"That’s why GetJar Gold works so well, it invites advertisers to participate as a third-party and it rewards consumers for downloading the apps and pays developers who make them.”
