GetGlue raises $12m to advance social TV platform

The 'Foursquare for telly' firm adds to the $6m war chest raised in 2010.

New York-based GetGlue has been beavering away at the increasingly interesting social TV space, with a platform that offers people loyalty rewards for checking in with TV shows.

In an era in which users are choosing to complement their viewing with an open laptop or smartphone, it's in a potentially very sweet spot.

It currently has 2m users, and told Reuters that as many as 75 TV networks use its dashboard via nearly 700 shows. Viewers get virtual stickers and gifts for checking in, while the networks get useful viewer data.

GetGlue is also launching ad sponsorship campaigns on the back of its activities with brands like Gap, Coke, and Gatorade.

The $12 million raised came from RHO Ventures and previous investors Time Warner, RRE Ventures and Union Square.
