That's according to new research from GfK, which says arcade classics and console ports dominate.

Seven million mobile games were downloaded in Germany last year, with 60 per cent generated by users of 3G handsets.

The figures came out of the GfK m2 retail panel, which is based on the weekly sales figures for download portals (network operators, content providers).

GfK says arcade classics and ports of well-known console and PC games were especially favoured, particularly brain games and fun applications.

Official and unofficial games related to the European Football Championships and the summer Olympics in Beijing were among the most successful titles.

Games based on blockbuster films are also downloaded frequently, particularly during the two to three-week period following a film release in cinemas.
