Record 35m smartphone sales to drive Q4 operating profit to an all-time high of $4.5bn.
What a year for the Korean firm, which passed Apple and Nokia to become the biggest maker of smartphones in the world. This was mostly due to phenomenal sales of the Galaxy family of devices and, to a lesser degree, shipments of its lower-tier Bada series.
It's helped that HTC sales have flatlined a little, Nokia was quiet until December, RIM has had a horrible year with BlackBerry and LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson have failed to improve their minor shares. Of the biggies, only Apple could be considered to gave had as strong a year as Samsung.
In Q3, Samsung sold 27.8 million smartphones sold compared with 17.1 million for Apple.
Profits for Q4 were 73 per cent year on year, with total profits for 2011 at around $17bn.
The results were also improved by the $1.4bn sale of its hard disk drive business to Seagate Technology.

Samsung has a done a great job making their devices apparent and well known in every major country. Their wide array of phones are appealing to all types of demographics and they all run on the Android OS which is in demand right now especially with Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich) being released.
