Fujitsu develops voice recognition tech that talks back

Japanese giant joins race to get machines to understand what the hell you're on about.

What's a little different about this tech, from Fuji's Laboratories, is that it's entirely voice based, with no need to touch the handset

The firm says there are some situations—such as walking, driving, and working—where users must keep their eyes and hands focused on the task at hand.

In these scenarios, the tech needs to talk back.

So, Fuji has come up with a system that pulls up relevant information and reads it out loud. For instance, when the user speaks a particular phrase from a news headline that the system has read, the system will read more detailed articles related to that topic.

Needless to say, the company claims the tech is also advanced in terms of its understanding of different voice inflections, background noise etc. There's more detail on all this here.

Fujitsu expects to start commercialising this technology as a mobile user interface for cloud services within fiscal 2012.
