FT launches Android app

Continues Apple aversion with Google platform expansion.

Following its controversial snub to Apple by withdrawing its iOS dedicated app, the firm has produced a native Android app, which will run across both smartphones and tablets alike.

The FT app will run on Android Market and features will include — offline access, automatic content updates and full catalogue of information.

The release of the Financial Times to Google's OS comes as the broadsheet's digital popularity continues to grow. It has 250,000 digital subscribers and almost four million registered users.

Steve Pinches, FT group product head emerging technologies, said: "The FT’s new Android app uses a hybrid of HTML5 and native technology, building on the same technology used to create the FT web app and then incorporating the best elements of Android to deliver a great experience for readers."

FT famously removed its app from iTunes after taking exception to Apple's 30 per cent commission and then proceeded to create a HTML5 web app in its place, which now has one million users.

The app is free to download and provides registered users with the first eight stories for free, but payment of between £4.49 to £6.49 is required depending on the features that are wanted.
