Frost & Sullivan: SMS to evolve and grow

Next gen text to include contextual presence, location information, and user profiles.

In a report prepared for Comverse, Frost & Sullivan says text messaging will continue its dominance in the messaging arena and will evolve with additional features over the next three to five years.

There are nearly four trillion messages sent a year, but operators are concerned about price erosion and the impact of mobile IM. They're fighting back through initiatives such as the Rich Communication Suite Initiative, which will establish standards for richer messaging formats.

Gabriel Matsliach, president of products and operations at Comverse, said: “As the largest generator of mobile revenues after voice, messaging holds enormous potential for operators."

Comverse HUB Value-Added Services spans voice, messaging, mobile internet and mobile advertising.
