Freeverse launches iPhone augmented reality fairy app

Does that mean every time your 3GS runs out of battery life, 17 fairies die?

Do you believe in fairies? iPhone games developer Freeverse does, and it has an app to prove it.

Fairy Trails went live last night, and lets players try to catch digital fairies, fireflies and butterflies by pointing their iPhone at the surrounding scenery, and tapping on them as they fly past.

The iPhone 3GS version uses a combination of accelerometer and compass to detect the fairies, while the basic iPhone version just uses tilting controls. iPod touch owners - who don't have a camera - get a virtual forest instead of real scenery.

"The iPhone's ability to allow us to merge 3D game elements with real world, real time environments, opens up tremendous possibilities for new games and apps," says Freeverse president Ian Lynch Smith.

"We're really excited about this new technology and have just begun to scratch the surface of its potential."
