Vodafone shuts it down amid competition from Google and Nokia.
Vodafone has closed down its mobile navigation division Wayfinder, according to a report on Swedish news site Sydsvenskan.
Why? The quote from spokesperson Anna Cloke doesn't mince words. "We could not charge for something that others gave away for free."
Vodafone bought Wayfinder for $30 million in January last year, but since then Google has launched its free Google Maps Navigation for Android, while Nokia has added navigation features to its free Ovi Maps app.
Most mobile navigation firms have been bullish in the face of the challenge from Nokia and Google, but Wayfinder's closure shows that the threat is very real.
In total, 90 jobs have been lost from the closure, according to Sydsvenskan.
