Paper Toss downloads reach 24 million.
Independent iPhone games developer Backflip Studios says its Paper Toss game has now been downloaded more than 24 million times.
The free game has found a fervent following on the App Store since its release in June 2009, with Backflip making money through in-game ads and by upselling players to paid versions of the game.
In March, the developer revealed it had made $2.5 million of revenues in the previous nine and a half months, including $1 million from in-game advertising alone.
Backflip's other games are also racking up impressive download stats, with Strike Knight topping four million since its release in May 2010, and Graffiti Ball notching up one million since its release in July.
While some developers and publishers see in-app payments as the way to make money from free iPhone games, Backflip shows that advertising is a viable alternative - as long as the games are good enough to generate the necessary repeat plays.
