Free iPhone apps on offer from Starbucks in the US

Get Shazam Encore with your soy latte.

iOS users are famously happy to bag premium apps for free: witness the popularity of sites like Free App A Day. Now coffee chain Starbucks is getting in on the freebie App Store action, via a partnership with Apple.

The company has started offering Pick of the Week cards in its US stores, offering a free download of Shazam's premium application Shazam Encore, redeemed via a code on the back of the card. CNET reports that Starbucks already runs a similar scheme for iTunes music downloads.

The partnership has not been officially announced: neither Apple nor Starbucks has commented officially on their plans for future promotions of this kind.

Shazam Encore costs $5.99 in the US App Store, so the deal is an attractive one. What's unclear is whether Shazam still gets paid for these downloads by Apple and/or Starbucks.
