Foursquare takes a stand on social location privacy

More transparency on what data users are sharing.

Social location service Foursquare has tweaked the way its privacy controls work, to ensure users aren't shocked by how much data they're sharing with the wider world.

Changes include the ability to share email addresses and phone numbers with friends, opt out of mayorships, and have more control over email settings.

"It seems that a lot of concerns over information sharing on location-based services arise from confusion over what is shared and where it’s shared," explains an official blog post.

To deal with that, the company has published an explanation of how it uses and shares users' location data, and also a grid specifying which data is public or private.

"We encourage anyone who uses location-based services and social networking sites to educate themselves about how their information is shared and to familiarize themselves with the user settings available on each site," says the blog post.

The changes come ahead of today's anticipated announcement of Facebook's geolocation service, which is likely to have been a factor in Foursquare's changes.
