Foursquare passes 500k users on record checkin day

Not a bad way to kick off the SXSW conference.

Social location service Foursquare now has more than 500,000 users, and has totted up more than 15.5 million checkins to the 1.4 million venues in its system.

The figures were published by the company on its blog, where it also revealed that more than one million badges have been awarded, and that 1,200 of those venues are offering discounts to Foursquare users.

The blog post also claims that last Friday was Foursquare's busiest day ever, with more than 275,000 checkins.

Except yesterday, the company tweeted that it had passed that number with several hours remaining in the day.

This all comes on the eve of the SXSW conference in Texas, which is expected to see a barrage of social location news from Foursquare and its rivals.

Talking of which... While 500,000 users is impressive, Foursquare isn't the largest app of its type. Last month, Booyah's MyTown passed the one million mark.

However, Foursquare is hoping for growth from its own mobile apps - available on more platforms than just the iPhone - as well as from other apps using its API.

iPhone Twitter app Tweetie 2 is the latest to add Foursquare support, for example.
