Foursquare passes 3m users and bags MTV VMAs deal

Big milestone and dedicated awards badge.

Social location service Foursquare signed up its three millionth user this weekend, while also signing a high-profile marketing partnership with the MTV VMAs.

The three million figure is based on analysis of the company's public user profile URLs, although Foursquare itself has yet to confirm the milestone.

However, it has announced a new partnership with MTV, based around the upcoming Video Music Awards (VMAs).

It's a contest to win a trip for two to the event next month. Fans are asked to follow MTV's profile on Foursquare, then check-in to any music vdnue in the next week.

For doing that, they'll get a dedicated MTV VMA Moonman badge for their virtual collection, while being entered into the prize draw.

It's an extension of an existing partnership between MTV and Foursquare:

"We started with talent doing checkins and tips, and we are still doing that, but the change is that we’re going broader to include MTV the brand as well in areas where it makes sense," a spokesperson tells Mashable.

In separate news, Foursquare got a big promotional boost in New York's Times Square over the weekend, via huge electronic billboards for retailer American Eagle inviting people to check-in.
