Foursquare passes 15m users

Triples in the space of a year.

In November 2010, the social check-in platform had reached 4.5 million users, which was up from 100,000 in the same period the year before.

And now the firm celebrates another milestone, this time more than tripling its user base to over 15 million.

The New York-based company has half of its users in the US, while the other 50 per cent are spread across the rest of the globe.

This comes following our report of rival location-based firm Gowalla being acquired by Facebook, presumably to enhance its check-in and status features.

Facebook currently has 350 million mobile users, while other location-based social network figures include Loopt on five million, MyTown on 4.5 million, Scvngr and Gowalla take two million apiece.

Foursquare revealed another milestone recently as it passed one billion check-ins in September, up from 100 million in July 2010.
