Foursquare celebrates 10 million users with blizzard of stats

But how many of those people are actively using the social location service?

Social location service Foursquare has announced that it has signed up its 10 millionth user, and has celebrated the milestone by publishing an infographic packed with stats on the company's growth.

The company was only founded in March 2009, so it's notched up those 10 million users in a little over two years. Foursquare reports that it has notched up 358 million check-ins outside the US, highlighting its international nature.

It has also listed some of its most popular locations for check-ins, including Apparel (Old Navy, H&M), Victoria's Secret), Home (Home Depot, Ikea, Lowe's) and Retail (Target, Walmart, Macy's).

78,387 venue mayors are dislodged every day as users compete for status, and there have been 1,061 birth announcements in hospital check-ins.

These quirky stats show how Foursquare is becoming part of its users' daily lives, but one rather important stat is left out of the infographic: how many of those 10 million signups have become active users of the service. That's the more important figure to show how Foursquare is growing.
