With 12 days left until Christmas arrives, Kaspersky Lab and YouGov have found that 41 per cent of Brits aged over 55 have added a tablet, smartphone, or laptop to their festive wish lists.
The result is contrary to popular belief that the older generation desperately yearn for a new pair of socks, though three per cent of respondents did actually request the foot-based fabric. In fact, the desire for socks spiked to 15 and 21 per cent for 18-24 and 25-34 year-olds, respectively.
Meanwhile, more youngsters requested Christmas jumpers and books than the over 55s, presumably because the latter would rather get their hands on an e-reader.
David Emm, senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, said: “The whole nation is becoming increasingly reliant on technology. Gone are the days when technology was aimed solely at younger people, it is no longer age dependent.
"As more mature consumers open their eyes to what technology has to offer, they need to be aware that times have changed, and issues such as cybercrime and malware are at the forefront of modern internet activity and are developing fast. However, there are simple internet security measures you can put in place to make technology fun and safe for all ages this Christmas."
