New scheme unveiled as car maker adds voice control to Android and BlackBerry apps
Ford has launched its own Mobile App Developer Network to support the creation of apps that integrate with its SYNC in-car computing system.
The company has also given SYNC a makeover so that it supports voice and steering wheel control of Android and BlackBerry apps, with Pandora internet radio, Stitcher 'smart radio' and Orangatame’s OpenBeak the first to support the technology.
The first car to support the new SYNC AppLink function will be the 2011 Fiesta - Ford says it will introduce AppLink on all SYNC-equipped vehicles next year, as well as provide interoperability with iPhone and other smartphones.
To make sure there are enough apps out there supporting AppLink, Ford has activated a new developer network on its SYNCmyride website.
The company says it is completing beta-testing on the SDK, with a broader release of the development tools planned for later this year.
