Success of Team USA at the World Cup drives fans to the mobile web
Consumption of football-related mobile content tripled in the US during the World Cup, according to a census-based study by market analyst Ground Truth.
Ten days before the start of the World Cup, an average of 10.7 per cent of visitors to what Ground Truth calls the most popular mobile sports sites accessed soccer-related content, but on the tournament’s opening day, 32.2 per cent tuned in for soccer news and updates.
The day with the highest percentage of mobile browsers seeking soccer information was June 23rd, when the US faced Algeria, at 41.1 per cent.
Other US games - against versus England on June 12th (38.6 per cent), Slovenia on June 18th (35.8 per cent) and Algeria on June 23rd (40.8 per cent) represented peaks in soccer traffic patterns to the sites.
Ground Truth used its True View methodology to measure traffic to ESPN and its soccer properties, SoccerNet and ESPN/soccer between May 31st and July 11th.
