Fishlabs goes direct in Russia

3D mobile game publisher teams with Iricom to launch localised portal and fight piracy.

Germany's Fishlabs has pushed further into eastern Europe by launching a direct-to-consumer portal in Russia.

The company has teamed with local mobile service provider Iricom for WAP billing integration and hopes to take advantage of the lower installed base of games consoles in the country relative to the West.

In a strategic move, the portal will enable viral distribution of content with in-game billing events. Fishlabs says that this way even if its games get pirated, it will still make money from the billing element.

Fishlabs has already translated many of its titles into Russian as part of an existing distribution agreement it has with Iricom.

Michael Schade, CEO and co-founder of Fishlabs, said: "Russia is an unbelievably attractive market for us. Combined with an in-game online connection, we can now generate significant revenues even from pirated copies via the PSMS connection through Iricom."
