FEATURE: Boom times for mobile social networking?

Potential of mobile communities remains largely untapped, according to new research.

Social networking giant MySpace has nine million people accessing its services from mobile phones in the US alone.

However, the potential of mobile communities remains largely untapped, according to figures from ME Research partner Direct2 Mobile.

For example, the 2008 MySpace mobile user base equates to 12 per cent of its US online total, suggesting the much talked-about PC-to-mobile migration has yet to happen in earnest.

Direct2 Mobile's chief researcher Nick Lane said: "If half of desktop social networkers from all sites embraced mobile it would equate to around 290 million users, based on current market estimates.

"The revenue possibilities are even more exciting. That many people paying a $3 per month subscription would generate $10.4 billion per year. Or $7.92 billion based on an ad-funded free model with a CPM of US$3 on an average of 25 page impressions per user per day."
