Well, it lets them seem like they're prospering, anyway.
Here's a sign of the times: an iPhone app whose sole purpose is to let users pretend to be the mayor of places in social location app Foursquare.
It's called Fake Mayor, and has been launched on iPhone's App Store by independent developer Stephen Coast.
"Have you always wanted to be mayor of somewhere in your favorite check-in app like foursquare? Well now you can without all that inconvenient checking in," explains its product listing.
"Fake Mayor lets you define a venue and automatically makes you mayor. Surprise your check-in crazy friends by instantly becoming mayor of their bar, club or other venue!"
Worth 99 cents? Hmm.
