Rumour suggests social network will play Twitter at its own game to connect more brands and users.
Twitter's hashtag concept groups tweets into relevant timelines, such as #FollowFriday, thus anyone tweeting or searching the aforementioned tag can track the posts of others that are also using it.
Beyond organisation, it's also become commonplace for users to add quirky hashtags to tweets, while it offers brands the opportunity to encourage interactions and track activity.
Facebook is now rumoured to be integrating the hashtag into its social network with a view to increase communications between users, as well as offering advertisers more exposure, according to the WSJ.
Of course, use of such a tool isn't exclusive to Twitter. Indeed, Facebook-owned Instagram is full of hashtags, which is the common method of tracking images on the app. Facebook's integration is said to be imminent and comes following its new News Feed design announcement, which has been inspired by mobile.
