Facebook Credits mandatory for games

The exclusive way to get real money into a game from July.

TechCrunch reports that some developers will be alarmed by the news, but Facebook believes the five month preparation period will be enough for them to adjust.

The rule only applies to Canvas games, while titles that use Facebook Connect aren’t affected.

Facebook says developers can keep their own in-game currencies but they will be topped up using Facebook Credits, if that makes sense.

But one wonders how long they will maintain these proprietary currencies when there are so many incentives to go with Credits, such as promotion on Facebook’s Games dashboard.

Apparently, Facebook has been okaying the switch with the big hitters – Zynga, Playdom, Playfish, and CrowdStar — and is now ready to roll it out.

Ultimately, this seems to be about Facebook muscling in and taking control (and making 30 per cent per transaction) but there's also a certain sense to eradicating the space of multiple systems that only make things messy for consumers.

How long before we see credits become like PayPay, and a 'pay with Facebook' option popping up all over the web?
