European mobile market 'on road to recovery'

So says Frost & Sullivan, which pinpoints apps, LBS and EU funding as new growth drivers.

The European mobile market is on the road to recovery from the economic downturn, according to new research from Frost & Sullivan.

The medicine comprises a combination of entertainment, convergence, communication and applications in vertical markets.

Examples given include the rise of the app store concept, services based on GPS positioning (specifically context-aware social networking), and €1 billion of funding being thrown at the sector by the EU as part of its recovery plan.

Frost & Sullivan doesn't go so far as to put any figures on the value of the market itself, however.

Frost & Sullivan analyst Saverio Romeo said: “The European Mobile Industry is slowly recovering from the economic downturn. Some initiatives and ideas have helped the industry and set the basis for future developments.

"However, the future landscape of the mobile market needs to evolve further towards several directions. The next mobile experience is not just communication, it is a combination of entertainment, convergence, communication and applications in vertical markets."
