ESPN's MVNO nightmare is over: it is being re-born as a branded app on Verizon Wireless V Cast phones.
Verizon has signed a multiyear agreement for the rights to the giant sports brand and will now deliver a rich media feed of sports scores, news and video highlights to handsets.
The partners also confirmed that the ESPN channel would be added to the V Cast broadcast TV service, which Verizon will launch by the end of March.
The Mobile ESPN service will be included free as part of the $15 a month TV package or $3 a day for V Cast's assorted multimedia offerings.
It’s a new era for ESPN after the company tried to launch its own MVNO on the Sprint network in 2005, before pulling the plug in September 2006. It was believed to have fewer than 30,000 customers.
