ESPN Premier League goals app goes free

ESPN Premier League goals app goes free

Broadcaster chooses reach over revenue for ESPN Goals highlights package.

ESPN Goals was launched last season with free to access live scores and news, but it charged £3.99 a month for video. This was reduced to £1.50 in February.

The app offers the first place to see goals and highlights from English Premier League matches, along with previews, scores, weekly round-ups, alerts and more.

It is available on iOS, Android, WinPho, Ovi and BlackBerry – that's two more platforms than last year.

ESPN says the move to free is as much about brand-building as anything – and this is a priority in a region so dominated by Sky in terms of sports broadcasting.

Sky broadcasts the majority of live games in the UK. ESPN has rights to a smaller number, but does has the exclusive three-year rights to the mobile channel (starting from last season).

Goals are available within minutes of being scored except for Saturday games, when they are available after the 5.15pm UEFA window.

Tom Gleeson, vice president of digital media at ESPN International, said: "In its first season ESPA Goals showed advertisers the audience they can reach on mobile.

"In season two we want to connect even more fans to all the goals."

ESPN didn't disclose its existing user base for the ESPN Goals app, but says it has 'hundreds of thousands' of users accessing its various services on mobile every month, and that this figure grew 177 per cent year on year to 2010.
