eMarketer predicts $3.5bn of US mobile content revenues in 2014

Up from $1.5bn in 2010 with mobile games leading the charge.

US mobile content revenues will rise from $1.5 billion this year to $3.5 billion in 2014, according to a new report from eMarketer.

The company has split those between three content areas: mobile games, mobile video and mobile music.

eMarketer thinks games will be the largest category, rising from $849 million this year to $1.5 billion in 2014 - this is in the US only, remember.

Meanwhile, it predicts that mobile video revenues will rise from $548.3 million to $1.3 billion in the same period, while mobile music will grow from $143.2 million to $676.5 million.

eMarketer says that one of the big trends fuelling this growth will be cross-platform content, though.

"The decade ahead heralds a wholesale shift in the content consumption experience," says analyst Noah Elkin.

"Consumers will expect games, music and video to be available on demand or via subscription on TVs, mobile and PC. The content owners that will thrive in this digital ecosystem are the ones that understand the need to deliver seamlessly across every possible platform."

It's worth bearing that in mind when reading stories like today's reports on Sony and Amazon launching cross-platform subscription services.
