Elvis Presley estate sues over ringtones

Elvis Presley estate sues over ringtones

They can't go on together with suspicious minds.

The King's estate filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit against Arista Music in Germany demanding remuneration for various new media properties including ringtones.

It's all very tortuous but apparently dates back to a deal between Elvis and Arista in 1973, whereby rights to his entire back catalogue of more than 1,000 recordings were purchased by RCA/Arista for just $5.4 million.

The suit alleges that Elvis only received an annual payment of about $10 - $15 per song for the German rights – far less than he should have been.

So it's using the German copyright law of "equitable remuneration" to get back what it says it's owed. This includes digital products that "Presley himself could not have dreamed would someday exist."
