eBooks market to hit $9.7 billion by 2016

Triple the haul from this year.

Juniper Research's new report 'Mobile Publishing: eBooks, eMagazines & eNewspapers for Smart Devices' said specialist eReaders will drive the growth.

They will represent 30 per cent of all downloads by 2016.

This analysis implies that for all the progress made by smartphones and tablets as reading devices, they are not the preferred format for digital book fans.

It says that, while mobile handsets currently account for the largest share of eBook downloads, the majority of these are comprised by the Japanese manga market.

However, the report does reference the growing trend for storefront operators to enable synchronised eBook content across multiple devices including eReaders and phones.

Juniper also observed that bricks and mortar retailers are seeking to marry their digital and physical activities through their own readers and services.

Barnes & Noble, for example, has launched its own brand Nook eReader.
