Mobile platform specifics and product details still remain sketchy.

Online marketplace eBay has revealed plans to add image recognition technology to its mobile apps, which have so far seen over 20 million downloads.

The tech will work with the user taking a photo of their desired item, which will then be matched with relevant products for sale on the site.

At eBay's X.commerce conference John Donahue, eBay CEO said it's not yet clear, which devices the app with be compatible with but the new tech will arrive before the end of 2011.

On top of the platform mystery, it is also unclear whether the service will be restricted to a certain product type.

Statistics show that three eBay purchases are made via mobile every second and sellers now list over 700,000 new items per week using mobile phones.
