EA takes Tetris into multiplay era

Electronic Arts is to launch a multiplayer version of its iconic coin-op classic Tetris.

The connected version will allow players to compete with one another over the air regardless of their locations. It will also will feature player-matching and chat functions to improve the experience for consumers.

Michael Marchetti, recently-installed senior vice president and general manager of EA Mobile, said: “The great advantage of the mobile platform is its ability to connect people. These games are designed to ensure that a heated competition is never more than a few buttons away. We are committed to building the largest mobile gaming community, and we believe that multiplayer versions of the most popular mobile games of all time will move us closer to that goal."

Different gaming modes for multiplayer Tetris include duelling between two players, racing against a two-minute clock and first to clear 40 lines.

Other multiplayer titles from EA Mobile include Bejeweled, EA Pool and JAMDAT Bowling 2. The games work cross-carrier so that friends using different mobile providers can compete head-to-head.
