e-reader shipments to hit 67m by 2016

Is the future set to be powered by hybrid LCD and electronic ink devices?

UK-based analyst Juniper Research says the near triple of e-reader shipments from 25 million to 67 million across the next five years is down to leaders such as Amazon's Kindle receiving major price cuts from $349 to $79.

The device cost-cutting comes as the likes of Amazon enters the tablet market with its Kindle Fire.

The report is keen to highlight that the firm's electronic ink technology will ensure the Kindle e-readers stay popular in the wireless device space.

Although 25 million e-readers are expected to ship in 2011, this is less than half of the 55.2 million tablets that are predicted to be shipped, according to the report.

Daniel Ashdown, report authour, Juniper Research, said: "Amazon has done its homework: it knows there is not a one-size-fits-all device that makes everyone happy. While the iPad 2 -- which it sells -- is a premium tablet for Generation Y, Amazon has the wider market covered."

Amazon's Kindle Fire has been given mixed reviews in the run-up to its launch but it's predicted to sell five million devices before Christmas and launched early ahead of rival Barnes & Noble, which is releasing its Nook tablet this week too.

LCD tablets can provide a higher visual quality than electronic ink but the latter uses less battery.

The report claims the future will see vendors exploring hybrid displays for devices, which fuse both LCD and electronic ink technology together.
