DS pushes Nintendo higher

Gaming on the move is firmly in the mainstream, with lifetime DS sales hitting 77.5 million.

Nintendo's DS sales for the quarter ending June 30th dipped slightly to 6.94 million units, down from 6.98 million units the year before.

However, software sales for the period has risen by 2.33 million units to 36.59 million units, with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness/Explorers of Time performing well.

Nintendo has sold 77.54 million DS consoles since the machine was launched.

The company is outstripping rival Sony's PSP, which yesterday saw hardware sales increase from 2.13m units in Q1 FY2007 to 3.72m units in FY 2008. It was a similar story on PSP software, which rose to 11.8m units this Q1 compared to 9.8m in Q1 FY 2007.
