DoubleTwist targets Japan for mobile media synching

Tech firm DoubleTwist wants to help Japanese users transfer their iTunes Store downloads to any handset.

The company's desktop application is already available in the West, and allows users to drag and drop music, videos and photos onto hundreds of mobile phones and other devices.

It has hundreds of thousands of users in the West, but has just launched a localised version in Japan, where mobile will be a key selling point.

TechCrunch says the company is targeting the 13.6 million Japanese people who buy music from Apple's iTunes Store, and also the 21 million who watch videos on YouTube.

DoubleTwist's app is supporting nearly 170 handsets from Japanese operators NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and SoftBank at launch.

However, the news won't please record labels and broadcasters, not to mention Apple itself, which has been seeing strong sales for its iPhone in Japan.
