Did Apple sell 120,000 iPads on Friday?

That's what Investor Village's AAPL Sanity board think.

Apple may have sold 120,000 iPads on Friday, according to a group of Apple-watchers on the Investor Village website.

Pure speculation? Of course, but it's informed. The group sampled 99 orders over 19.5 hours on Friday to get the order numbers, and estimated that there were 124,596 orders from the US Apple Store that day.

They then subtracted 16,500, which is apparently the average number of orders on a typical day, and then multiplied the result by 1.11, taking into account the average number of iPads ordered per customer.

They then took away the number they first thought o... Okay, they didn't. But the group's calculations turned up 119,987 iPads.

What's more, they reckon that 69% of them were Wi-Fi only models, while the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models were roughly equal in popularity.

The topline figure? "Apple has been able to generate over $75 million in revenue on one day on a product that 99.9% of purchasers haven't touched or for that matter, even seen in person," says Valcent Financial Group's Victor Castroll, who's one of the AAPL Sanity group.
