Offering $250k per game as part of new StarFund initiative.
US social games publisher CrowdStar has teamed up with incubator YouWeb to launch a new fund aimed at mobile social games developers.
It's called StarFund, and will have up to $10 million available for investing in developers, in chunks of up to $250,000 per company. CrowdStar is promising marketing and analytics resources on top of this once games are released, and also possibly help with launching games in Asia and Europe.
YouWeb is the company that incubated OpenFeint, Sibblingz and iSwifter, along with CrowdStar. The latter recently had an App Store hit with Top Girl, having first established itself on Facebook.
"What we know is that great teams and products can still get to the top in mobile social gaming," says CrowdStar's head of mobile Blair Hamilton. "With StarFund, we are looking to fund the next stars in mobile social games."
It's an interesting time for mobile social game developers at the moment. There are a number of funding initiatives available for these kinds of games - witness MocoSpace's initiative for mobile web titles - while the likes of Zynga and DeNA are on the hunt for acquisitions and investments in talented indie studios too.
