Could Flook be the next big location-based iPhone app?

UK firm Ambient Industries is set to unveil 'location browser' next month.

UK startup Ambient Industries is set to launch its Flooki 'location browser' app for iPhone next month, according to co-founder Tristan Brotherton, who demoed the app at tonight's Mobile Monday event in London.

The app lets users browse nearby locations based on a mix of other users' photos and reviews, and more widely available data from the Internet.

“We've been building this for eight months, and we're launching in a month if it keeps working!” said Brotherton. “It's a location browser: a way to discover what's going on around you right now.”

Users take photos of places - bars or restaurants for example - and add their thoughts in text form. These are then uploaded as virtual 'cards', which other users can browse through - using a neat swiping interface like the iPhone's native photo gallery.

he cards can be browsed by location, or narrowed down to those uploaded by a user's friends, or people they have elected to follow (yep, Twitter vocabulary is catching on).

"You can collect these cards too," said Brotherton. "If you go to a place and think it's good, you can add that card to your collection so you can find it easily later on."

There are also game-like elements, because users get a score according to how many people have collected their cards and followed them.

Brotherton didn't get as far as discussing the business model behind Flook - it was a quickfire pitch - but the company's website says that "we've also created some brilliant new ways to connect local businesses to your mobile device - but this time in a way that works well for all parties involved."
