CoPilot brings satnav to Android phones

ALK Technologies' navigation system now available from Android Market.

The app delivers voice-guided turn instructions and 3D mapping for devices such as HTC Magic, T-Mobile G1 and the new HTC Hero.

It stores digital street maps on the phone, rather than relying on mobile Internet connectivity for per-trip data. Additional map regions can also be downloaded directly to the device.

That said, connected services are available and include real-time traffic alerts, five-day weather forecast information and a location sharing service called CoPilot LiveLink.

Michael Kornhauser, MD of ALK Technologies' CoPilot division, said: “The release of CoPilot Live for Android is a major milestone in our quest to provide full-featured navigation to the largest possible number of smartphone users.”
