Consumers WILL pay for apps, says Mplayit

And BlackBerry users will pay most, seemingly.

Free apps are hugely popular on all smartphone platforms, but app discovery service Mplayit says it has evidence that users are more willing to pay for apps than you might think.

Figures from its Facebook application show that around 35% of users are interested in paid apps. That's based on the percentage of paid titles in Mplayit's most popular app charts, as far as we can make out.

There are significant differences between iPhone, Android and BlackBerry though. 57% of the most popular iPhone apps on Mplayit are paid, compared to 33% on BlackBerry and 16% on Android.

The obvious caveat is that these stats just relate to apps that people are previewing and recommending on Mplayit, rather than actually buying on their respective app stores.

Still, Mplayit breaks down average prices of the most popular paid apps for each platform too: $5.99 for BlackBerry, $2.72 for Android and $1.99 for iPhone.

These stats - from March - also confirm Mplayit's earlier findings that iPhone owners are still game-centric. 68% of popular iPhone apps on its service are games, compared to 27% for BlackBerry and 21% for Android.
