comScore releases mobile dating stats for Europe

Texting still tops, although apps are growing fast.

You wait ages for some consumer research on mobile dating to come along, then two pieces arrive at once...

Last night, US measurement firm Ground Truth released its report on mobile dating usage over there. This morning, comScore has followed suit with its own figures for Europe.

It tracks nearly 11 million people using mobile dating services across Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the UK - up 52% in the last year.

These services are notably popular in Italy, where more than 3.3 million people are using these services - 7.1% of all mobile users.

Us Brits are more reticient though, with a, cough, penetration rate of 3.5% - 1.7 million people.

comScore says that text message remains the most popular method for accessing mobile dating, with 5.6 million users compared to the 5.4 million people using their mobile browser, and 1.8 million using apps.

However, apps are the fastest growing method, up 71% in the last year.

One challenge: too many young men. comScore says 22% of mobile dating users are 25-34 year-old males, while only 8.7% are 25-34 year-old females.

"It creates a challenge for the category to attract more females and increase the possibility of a positive match," says European VP of mobile Jeremy Copp.
