Comes With Music goes DRM-free for China

Could it be Nokia's biggest music market yet?

Nokia is launching its Comes With Music service in China today, and it will be entirely DRM-free - a first for the service.

It will also have the broadest range of handsets working with the service from day one - eight - including the X6 32GB, X6 16GB, 5230, 5330, 5800w, 6700s, E52 and E72i.

Nokia hasn't partnered with any operators for Comes With Music's Chinese debut. Instead, the handsets will be sold through a network of 80,000 retailers, via a partnership with local firm Huadong Feitian.

In another first, Chinese consumers who already own the eight handsets listed above will be able to sign up to the service today as well.

Nokia has all four major labels signed up, although 50% of its catalogue for China will be local content, with over 70 Chinese labels on board too.

"We looked at this marketplace with our label and publishing partners, and everybody agreed that the only way to captivate customers there is to offer something that is DRM-free," Nokia's Adam Mirabella tells Music Ally.
