More details have emerged of the DRM restrictions on Nokias new Comes With Music service.
The concept, announced yesterday, enables people to buy a Nokia device with a year’s music subscription giving unlimited access to millions of tracks. Once the year is complete, customers can keep all their music. Universal has signed up and Nokia is now in discussions with the other labels. But according to the Wall Street Journal, there will be some DRM-based restrictions once the 12 months are up. It claims consumers won't be able to make multiple copies, play their songs on other portable devices or burn tracks to CD. They will, however, be able to transfer them between mobile and PC.
Reports also speculate that Universal’s partnership with Nokia has emerged out of the label'sTotal Music idea, which aims to bundle music with retail and hardware brands in return for a rev share. Observers say Nokia will offer a per-device payment to Universal in exchange for catalogue access.
