Closure rumours surround Picsel

Sources claim troubled Scottish UI firm has gone into administration.

The Register has reported that it believes PricewaterhouseCoopers had been appointed as administrator to Picsel, which cut its workforce earlier this year in an attempt to reverse its decline.

ME's attempts to contact the firm were unsuccessful.

If the administration rumours are confirmed, it would be a sad end to a company that once boasted genuinely innovative technologies - and nursed bold ambitions.

Picsel made a flying start with file-viewing and browser technology that it embedded with Asian handset companies and operators, notably Samsung and NTT DoCoMo.

It was extremely successful, and Picsel was rumoured to be the subject of a big-money acquisition by Google. Instead, it opted for an IPO, which never came.

Picsel came unstuck when it attempted to turn its technology into a hosted publishing platform to be licensed by major brands.

It also tried to sue Apple over the ownership of smooth zooming technology.
